This is pretty much what the 1953 Plymouth Cranbrook convertible looked like when Mike bought it in 1975 for $150. The front end had lost a battle with a lamp post, but the car was sound otherwise. Text and photos copyright Michael Lamm 2012
I occasionally tuck my business card under the wiper blade of a car I?d like to buy. On the back of the card, I?ll scribble something like, ?When you get ready to sell this car, please give me first dibs. Hang onto this card.?
Over the years, I?ve had three owners respond, one of whom was a little old lady here in Stockton. She?d bought a cranberry-colored 1953 Plymouth Cranbrook convertible new, and she?d taken meticulously good care of it until her nephew challenged a lamp pole at a local mall parking lot.
I?d left my card on her windshield five years earlier, in 1970. Ordinarily, I wouldn?t have given a 1953 Plymouth a second thought, but this convertible was so nice. It had the continental kit and just about every other option and accessory available that year, so I thought, What the heck; I?ll leave my card. Can?t hurt.
Nothing for five years, and then one Sunday morning in 1975, she called. ?Do you remember that Plymouth convertible you left your card on some years back?? (No.) ?Well, you wanted to buy the car back then, and now I?m ready to sell it, but there?s a slight problem. The car hit a lamp pole and crumpled the front end. Would you still be interested??
I wasn?t sure, so I drove over to her house and surveyed the damage. Not too bad, actually ? a U-shaped front bumper, bumper pan, grille, bent fan, nice-sized hole in the back of the radiator, klooged hood and creased front fenders, but no structural damage, and the rest of the car looked great, including the top and original interior.
?How much?? I asked.
?Make it $150 and she?s yours,? the woman responded.
No problem. I wrote her a check. When I asked for background on the car itself, she told me she?d been a cashier for the local Chrysler-Plymouth dealer. This convertible stood in the showroom for most of 1953, and it?s the car customers would sit in before they decided to buy more plebeian Plymouths.
When the 1954 models arrived, her boss offered to let her buy the car as a used demo, so she did, and it was only because her loutish nephew had had it out with the pole that she was letting it go at all. She loved the car, but realized it would cost too much to have it straightened and repainted.

Lamm and his teenaged sons removed the bent sheetmetal, and Mike advertised for a parts car in the local newspaper. With the engine so accessible, he popped in new freeze plugs, then began bolting on ?new? bits from the parts car.
I took the car home, and my youngest son, John, helped me strip off the bent parts. I then put a want ad in our local newspaper asking if anyone had a 1953 Plymouth parts car. Sure enough, a nice Cranbrook coupe showed up, and I bought it for $200.

Mike and sons stripped off all trim, lamps, handles, badges, etc., and block sanded the body to bare metal.
I swapped out everything the convertible needed ? bumper, pan, grille, fenders, hood, radiator, fan, etc. ? but I didn?t reassemble the car right away, because I wanted to get it painted. In fact, I removed all the rest of the trim, lights, handles, etc., and my kids and I wet-sanded the body pretty much to bare metal. We?d do that occasionally when the boys were teenagers. They could pick up some extra bucks, and I?d get the car sanded in a day or two.

Stockton bodyman and customizer, Bob Wade, painted the Cranbrook in the original cranberry red. Total tab for paint and labor came to $379.39.
I then drove the peeled Plymouth over to Bob Wade, my favorite bodyman at the time, and he shot the car in the original cranberry. Came out great! Bob charged me $379.39 (I kept all the receipts, as I?ve done with most of my cars over the past half century), and I sold what was left of the parts car for $35.
After the respray, I put on a set of new tires, went totally through the brakes, bought a new battery, installed seat covers and had a few parts replated. I also replaced most of the weather stripping and rubber seals, the carpets front and rear and the plastic rear window. The rest of the top was fine, as was the hydraulic system to raise and lower it. By 1978, I had about $1,000 in the car.

Mike?s eldest son, Robert, drove the Plymouth during his senior year of high school. In all, Mike kept this car for four years, but others played through at the same time.
Our eldest son, Robert, was entering his senior year of high school, and he asked if he could borrow one of the several hobby cars I had at the time. Which one, I asked. Well, the Plymouth would be nice. I said sure, he was welcome to borrow it, but he?d have to pay that year?s DMV fee ($9), his own insurance and any incidentals. He agreed, and he drove the Plymouth daily until he went away to college.
One afternoon, though, as he was exiting the freeway on his way home from school, he heard a loud ?pop? and felt the front end mysteriously settle. Turned out the front swaybar had snapped, perhaps as a delayed result of hitting the lamp pole. Or just plain metal fatigue.

Mike?s friend, Mike Liddiard, parked his lift on the Lamms? property for about 17 years. When Liddiard moved to a new house, he retrieved the lift, and Lamm ordered a replacement the next day. Here Lamm?s replacing the snapped front sway bar on Liddiard?s lift.

That?s the Lamms? youngest son, John (?Jay?), sitting on the back bumper. He now owns and operates the 24 Hours of LeMons race series. In 1979, Mike traded the Plymouth in on a 1952 Nash-Healey roadster, the subject of his next chapter.
I replaced the sway bar and put an ad in Hemmings to sell the car. Got an almost immediate response from a Mopar collector in Sebastopol, about 140 miles northwest of here, asking if I?d like to swap the Plymouth plus cash for a 1952 Nash-Healey roadster he owned. I drove up to Sebastopol. The Nash-Healey needed work, but was basically quite decent. The Mopar man and I struck a deal, and I?ll tell you all about that in the next chapter.
Michael Lamm grew up in South Texas. He has always loved cars and, after graduating from Columbia University in New York in 1959, took a job as editor of Foreign Car Guide, a magazine about VWs. In the mid 1960s, Mike became managing editor of?Motor Trend and, in 1970, he co-founded Special-Interest Autos magazine in partnership with Hemmings Motor News. In 1978, Mike began to publish his own line of automotive books. For more information, go to www.LammMorada.com.

One thing you should try and find out is the thing that type of software you would like. There are many different varieties of computer viruses. You need a spam blocker, firewall program, registry scanner, software uninstaller, rogue remover or possibly a full suite of antivirus software. The thing is with a search at a major yahoo and google there are millions of web sites offering several types of protection. How do you opt for the top antivirus for you personally?
Since it is always harder to solve a problem once you already have it compared to to avoid it initially, I suggest locating a comprehensive antivirus software solution. A lot of the main ones offer an entire host of options you need to include things you need to protect yourself from registry problems, hackers and Trojan's. You should also check if updates will likely be available as new troubles are created. You will find new bugs invented each day your computer is confronted with online. You should keep your provider keeps up with the latest problems and will be offering a patch or quick fix when it's needed.
The next matter I usually hunt for is when they have security and a cash back option plainly experience the program. Amazingly I have had some these programs that slowed my computer down worse compared to the virus I want to to reduce. So don't get stayed with a course that you aren't proud of.
Certainly many people never think about running this sort of software until they have problems. Depending on how bad the thing is, may very well not be also in a position to access the web to discover a solution. If you ever inevitably be in this situation try commencing your system reset or system backup area on reset your computer to on of your past check points. If you use a Windows based system then you need to attend the device recovery option under start and many types of programs. Sometimes this may fix your computer completely. Even though this doesn't happen, it could allow it to be so you're able to access the web and discover a remedy.
Not what I like to recommend is reading some reviews from the software before you decide it. There are numerous internet sites offering reviews these varieties of products. You should consider asking you and your guests if they'd like to recommend anything. It appears that everyone's had some kind of computer issue in the past that serves to perfectly the who is able to show you what's and hasn't worked for him or her.

WASHINGTON?? The last frontier on Earth is out of this world, desolate, foreboding and moonlike, James Cameron said after diving to the deepest part of the ocean.
And he loved it.
"My feeling was one of complete isolation from all of humanity," Cameron said Monday, shortly after returning from the strange cold dark place seven miles (10.9 kilometers) below the western Pacific Ocean that only two other men have been to. "I felt like I literally, in the space of one day, had gone to another planet and come back. It's been a very surreal day."
More science news from msnbc.com
Researchers have announced the discovery of a tiny scorpion in Death Valley National Park, an unusual location, they said, since it lies hundreds of miles north of the known habitat of the newfound species' closest relatives.
Cameron, whose imagination of alien worlds yielded the blockbuster movie "Avatar," said there was one thing he promised to himself: He wanted to drink in how unusual it is.
He didn't do that when he first dove to the watery grave of the Titanic, and Apollo astronauts have said they never had time to savor where they were.
"There had to be a moment where I just stopped, and took it in, and said, 'This is where I am; I'm at the bottom of the ocean, the deepest place on Earth. What does that mean?'" Cameron told reporters during a Monday conference call after spending three hours at the bottom of the Mariana Trench, nearly seven miles down.
"I just sat there looking out the window, looking at this barren, desolate lunar plain, appreciating," Cameron said.
He also realized how alone he was, with that much water above him.
"It's really the sense of isolation, more than anything, realizing how tiny you are down in this big vast black unknown and unexplored place," Cameron said.
No deep-sea monsters
Cameron said he had hoped to see a strange deep-sea monster like a creature that would excite the storyteller in him and seem like out of his movies, but he didn't.
He didn't see tracks of small primitive sea animals on the ocean floor, as he did when he dove more than 5 miles deep weeks ago. All he saw were voracious shrimplike critters that weren't bigger than an inch. In future missions, Cameron plans to bring "bait" ? like chicken ? to set out.
Cameron said the mission was all about exploration, science and discovery. He is the only person to dive there solo, using a sub he helped design. He is the first person to reach that depth ? 35,576 feet ? since it was initially explored in 1960.
There had been a race to the bottom among rich and famous adventurers. Sir Richard Branson of Virgin venture fame has been building his own one-man sub to explore the depths of the ocean. Branson told The Associated Press on Monday that Cameron's dive was "a fantastic achievement."
Branson said he hoped to explore a different deep place first now, instead of the Mariana Trench. He planned later this year to dive to the deepest part of the Atlantic, the Puerto Rican trench, which is only five miles from his home. That area is just shy of six miles deep and has not been explored yet.
Branson said he hopes to take his one-man sub and join Cameron in a tandem dive of solo subs: "Together, we'll make a formidable team."
Three hours at the bottom
Cameron spent more than three hours at the bottom, longer than the 20 minutes Don Walsh and Jacques Piccard spent in the only other visit 52 years ago. But his time there was shorter than the six hours he had hoped for, and he didn't reach the trench walls, because he was running low on power. He said he would return, as would the sub's Australian co-designer, Ron Allum.
"I see this as the beginning," Cameron said. "It's not a one-time deal and then moving on. This is the beginning of opening up this new frontier."
"To me, the story is in the people in their quest and curiosity and their attempt to understand," Cameron said.
He spent time filming the Mariana Trench, which is about 200 miles (320 kilometers) southwest of the Pacific island of Guam. The trip down to the deepest point took two hours and 36 minutes, starting Sunday afternoon U.S. East Coast time.
His return aboard his 12-ton, lime-green sub called Deepsea Challenger was a "faster-than-expected 70-minute ascent," according to National Geographic, which sponsored the expedition. Cameron is a National Geographic explorer-in-residence.
Couldn't catch critters
The only thing that went wrong was the hydraulics on the system to collect rocks and critters to bring them back to land. Just as he was about to collect his first sample, a leak in the hydraulic fluid sprayed into the water and he couldn't bring anything back.
When Cameron climbed into his sub, it was warm because it was near the equator. His cramped vehicle ? his head hit one end and his feet the other ? was especially toasty because of the heat given off by electronics. It felt "like a sauna" with temperatures of more than 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius), he said.
But as he plunged into the deep, the temperature outside the sub dropped to around 36 degrees (2 degrees Celsius), he said.
The pressure on the sub was immense ? comparable to three SUVs resting on a toe. The super-strong sub shrank three inches under that pressure, Cameron said.
"It's a very weird environment," Cameron said. "I can't say it's very comfortable. And you can't stretch out."

Hello to you all,
Australia is one of the many western societies becoming a place of obsessive, poor nutrient over-eating; many Australians have poor time supervision coupled with misguided incentives and misinformation, health has been put in the back of our minds. The health of our western culture is decreasing rapidly. More work on from the drug companies is steering many toward artificial and short term answers. Weight loss surgery and weight loss pills are becoming the norm in our society. Pharmaceutical companies are pumping out millions of pills to the unsuspecting social to merely treat the "symptoms"* of poor health associated deficiencies and all the while multiple negative reactions cause many to go through the whole process again months or even weeks or days later to receive more "Bandaid Solutions"*.
This report presents a practical approach to achieving and maintaining Optimum health

? Nutrition; Your knowledge and wisdom
With the weather as erratic as it is colse to the globe, cooling down to the chills of autumn (fall) and winter, or heating up to the searing temperatures of hot summer days it is prominent to be feeding the body with the right number of Healthy, Fresh and Organic nourishment to withhold a sustainable healthy lifestyle. Eat into some fresh homemade vegetable soups which are fast absorbed into the body due to their already liquid state. Fresh fruits are also a staple part of a healthy and sustainable lifestyle as well as lean and organic meats from chicken and beef to fish and other highly lean game meats which are exceptionally high in protein and Iron whilst very low in fat.
Most local fresh food markets (Not Supermarkets) are a great source of healthy nutrient rich food and you can enjoy the climate with a friend over a healthy lunch. If you are unable to make it to the markets and your only option is the supermarket, then I encourage you to do your shopping from colse to the outside edge of the shop, where all the freshest vegetables, meats, dairy and fresher bread are kept. Buy or even grow (if you can) some herbs and spices to enhance the flavour of your meals as well as growth the number of minerals in your diet. Minerals help the body discharge all the vitamins which work to build best a uncut health.
With my experience in the health and Fitness industry i have recognised that very rarely do many of my clients focus on, take note of or are even aware of state of interior health, yet only later after the health has destabilised to the point of illness or disease do many recognise it in their lack of energy, motivation, fluctuating weight (not always increased) and lastly decreased health status.
Here are a few questions you should be asking yourself and answering...honestly!
1. Are you involved with the number of toxins and chemicals in your environment?
2. Do you feel you get sufficient nourishment from the food you currently eat?
3. Do you eat organic produce?
4. Do you currently get a sound 8 hours sleep every night?
5. Do you feel alert every morning when you wake?
6. Do you have a hard time losing weight?
7. Do you consume coffee, tea, sugar, candy or similar products to give you a boost while the day?
? More than 65 insecticides, pesticides and herbicides can be found on everyday furnish purchased at the market?
? More citizen today are reliant on outside stimulants to get through the day, caffeine being the biggest culprit
? Most of us currently have a scheduled maintenance for our car, our home air conditioner, water systems and even our pools; but we are not always as diligent with our own internal maintenance.
"Education and Not Medication Is the Key To Optimum, Sustainable health & Wellness"
You see then, the biggest issue (pardon the pun) for many citizen this day and age in our western societies isn't just a lack of fitness, motivation, determination but also a lack of real and life giving knowledge and schooling when it comes to healthy nourishment and sustainability. As a health pro I believe and promote a holistic approach to a unblemished and sustainable lifestyle. health professionals should be educating clients and patients toward a holistic and unblemished lifestyle through sufficient nourishment and exercise. I firmly believe that schooling and not medication is the key to an optimum, sustainable health and wellness.
? Exercise; Your healthy motivation to achieve!
The days are gone when:
1. A simple walk colse to the block was the motivation to go to the shops and buy the milk and bread. Instead Today: driving to the shops in the car is much more time efficient.
2. A game of football, cricket or soccer in the street was interrupted by passing cars and the milkman! Instead Today: interrupted by a new game for the "simulated game console"
3. A rainy day was spent inside playing cards, construction diminutive battle grounds in the bedroom, a game of monopoly or scrabble Instead Today: hours spent in front of the 100cm plasma playing the newest software game
4. The tired parent establishment a simple meal consisting a platter of fresh carrots, celery, cheese, tomato, capsicum, cucumber, beetroot, apples, bananas, nuts, bread rolls, sliced ham and turkey... And that is just what I can remember from when I was 5yrs old. Instead Today: order Fatty, Overcooked, Unhealthy Take Away
These are just a few examples of the changes which I have noticed in the Australian western cultured background of the last 30 years and I grew up in a large house where everyone who could; played soccer, gymnastics, cricket, basket ball, hockey, volleyball, tennis, Afl, rugby league, rugby union..you name it we played it either competitively or in a backyard, quiet street capacity. Exercise has been left in the dark and only the committed, sport goal oriented, individuals remain. Otherwise it is those committed to some sort of weekly fitness schedule with a personal trainer. To those who don't have a personal trainer and last longer than 12 months, striving for above mean health...congratulations. I'm talking about those who may be in the kind of gold passes to their local gym, I'm talking about those who step outside at any time of the year and share in some sort of Exercise regimen or personal health interest.

According to Strategic Insights, a market research firm serving the mutual fund industry, more than two-thirds of the $150 billion that investors added to mutual funds in 2004 landed in asset allocation products.
So what exactly are these all-in-one investments? In a nutshell, they are broadly diversified, professionally managed funds that can serve as a complete portfolio. They come in primarily two flavors.
* Lifestyle or life-cycle funds focus on a particular level of risk. These can be an appropriate choice for investors who want a diversified core investment solution that offers a specific level of risk and potential reward.
* Age- or target-year-based funds target a specific investment time frame or goal. As each fund?s target year approaches, its exposure to stocks (and corresponding risk) will decrease and its exposure to bonds and money market investments will increase to reduce risk and preserve capital. These funds can be suitable choices for investors seeking a core investment strategy for retirement planning or who have a set number of years to invest.
American Century currently offers both types. My Retirement Portfolios is a series of five age- or target-year-based funds, while One Choice Portfolios is a separate series of five risk-based funds.
Both portfolios are made up of American Century stock funds, bond funds and money market funds. The portfolios? managers adjust asset classes and weightings to emphasize investments they believe provide the most favorable outlook for achieving results.

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Rick Santorum won the Louisiana Republican presidential primary Saturday, beating front-runner Mitt Romney in yet another conservative Southern state.
"We're still here. We're still fighting. We still believe, as this race really shows," Santorum told supporters in Green Bay, Wis.
Although the victory gives Santorum bragging rights and at least eight more delegates, it does not change the overall dynamics of the race; the former Pennsylvania senator still dramatically lags behind Romney in the hunt for delegates to the GOP's summertime nominating convention.
Even so, Santorum's win underscores a pattern in the drawn-out race.
The under-funded underdog has tended to win in Bible Belt states that include Tennessee, Mississippi and Alabama. Romney ? a deep-pocketed, highly organized former Massachusetts governor ? has persistently struggled in such heavily conservative regions.
Said Santorum: "I'm not running as a conservative candidate for president. I am the conservative candidate for president."
Neither candidate was in the state as Louisiana Republicans weighed in. Nor was former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who was trailing in Louisiana. With half the precincts counted, Santorum had 49 percent to 26 percent for Romney. Gingrich was far back at 17 percent, followed by Ron Paul with 6 percent.
Romney took a rare day off Saturday, with no public events. Santorum spent the day campaigning in Pennsylvania and next-up Wisconsin, which votes April 3 and represents one of his last chances to beat Romney in a Midwestern state.
Santorum told voters in Milwaukee that he expected their state to be "the turning point in this race."
In an unmistakable jab at Romney, Santorum added: "Don't make the mistake that Republicans made in 1976. Don't nominate the moderate. When you do, we lose." It was a reference to Ronald Reagan losing the 1976 Republican nomination to incumbent President Gerald Ford, and Democrat Jimmy Carter winning the White House.
Early exit polls conducted for The Associated Press and the television networks showed that Santorum's win in Louisiana was one of his strongest performances to date among conservatives, working class voters and those calling the economy their top issue. And he continued his dominance among white evangelical voters and those looking for a candidate who shares their religious beliefs. Santorum topped Romney among evangelical voters by more than 2 to 1.
As in previous Southern states, Romney's best showing came among those voters with annual incomes above $100,000 and those who prioritized a candidate's ability to defeat President Barack Obama in November.
The bad economy was the top issue for Louisiana voters. Most were gloomy about prospects for a recovery, saying they felt the economy was getting worse instead of better. While some national surveys suggest Americans are feeling optimistic about economic improvement, just one in eight Republican primary voters said they thought a recovery was under way.
Romney is far ahead in the delegate count and on pace to reach the necessary 1,144 delegates before the party's convention in August.
With the Louisiana results, Romney leads the overall race for delegates with 563, followed by Santorum with 271, Newt Gingrich with 135 and Ron Paul with 50.
Santorum badly needed a rebound after a decisive Illinois loss to Romney earlier in the week that moved party stalwarts to rally around the front-runner. Many urged Santorum and Gingrich to drop out of the race.
Both refused, and campaigned aggressively in Louisiana in hopes that a victory there would justify them staying in ? despite Republican worries that the long nomination fight could hurt the party's chances against Obama. The Democratic incumbent faces no serious primary challenge and his re-election campaign already is well under way.
Romney barely campaigned in Louisiana, though his allies spent on TV ads there. Instead, Romney was looking past the results and toward the general election.
"I want the vote of the people of Louisiana so we can consolidate our lead," Romney said Friday during a stop in Shreveport. He told supporters his campaign wants to focus on "raising the money and building the team to defeat someone that needs to be out of office in 2012, and that's Barack Obama."
The Louisiana exit poll found that in a hypothetical choice between just the two top contenders, Santorum's lead over Romney tops 20 percentage points, suggesting the former senator would pick up votes from Gingrich's and Paul's current supporters.
Earlier Saturday, Santorum said he wanted to debate Romney without their trailing competitors on stage.
"This race has clearly gotten down to two candidates that can win the nomination," Santorum told reporters in Milwaukee. "I'd love to have a one-on-one debate."
In the run-up to Louisiana's voting, Santorum found himself on the defensive after suggesting he'd prefer a second term for Obama over a Romney presidency. Santorum was all but forced to walk back those comments, saying less than 24 hours before Louisiana polls opened that "over my dead body would I vote for Barack Obama."
Romney also faced trouble last week when a top aide compared the switch from a primary to a general election campaign to an Etch A Sketch toy, suggesting earlier campaign positions could be easily wiped away.
But most Louisiana voters said they weren't concerned with the comment, with only about one in five in exit polls calling this week's Etch A Sketch controversy an important factor in their vote.
Louisiana has complicated delegate rules: Even though there were 20 delegates at stake Saturday, they are awarded proportionally to the candidates who receive more than 25 percent of the vote.
Most states divide all the available delegates among the candidates who meet the minimum threshold. Louisiana's system is strictly proportional, with any leftover delegates designated as uncommitted, meaning they will be fought for at the state convention.
The next key fight comes April 3 in Wisconsin. Romney's campaign is airing TV ads in the state, and his super PAC allies have plowed more than $2 million into TV advertising there.
Also voting April 3 are Maryland and the District of Columbia. There are 95 delegates combined at stake in the three contests.
